Organizing in the Mirror

by Bunky Lundberg

Image and the impact imparted are two more pieces of the puzzle in becoming organized. Think of the impact of a professional, organized appearance. Now think of a disheveled, messy and unkempt one. Judgements based on these pictures are made on many levels. They may cause you to wonder about ability versus inability, competence versus incompetence, and confidence versus insecurity. Many times these judgements are unfounded, but an organized image can make a difference immediately. In looking for synonyms for the word "appearance", there was an interesting progression. Appearance has to do with the look, the form, the exterior, façade and outward show. However, in further looking at some of those words, the progression went from "look" to "coming across" to "giving the impression of being" to "emerging," "materializing," and "becoming visible." That image and growth are interconnected is quite a concept. Today, finally, women of all sizes and shapes have the possibility for creating that "look" that produces powerful impact and growth. According to plus size model and cosmetologist, Suzanne Cortright, "Defining your own personal image is the first outward step toward success. Knowing your fashion preferences and being comfortable with your body shape enables you to stay in style whether you like the classics or the latest trends. Black, brown and navy have universal appeal, but is it important to dare to have fun with colors such as fuchsias, plum and pastels." As a cosmetologist, Cortright has learned the importance of working with her clients' face and shapes and bone structures when considering both hair styles and makeup application. Lifestyle is also a consideration and there is a the need to know whether styles need to be high maintenance or low. She guarantees that dry damaged hair does not present an organized or professional appearance. "A great haircut and a new pair of shoes can update any look." Creating an organized appearance begins in the mirror, then in the closet. Difficult as it may be, let go of all items that prevent you from having the image you desire. Group like items together. Get your clothing and shoes into good condition. When your wardrobe is sorted by color and by season, your control and creativity amazingly come to life. Improving or changing an image, just like any change, is not necessarily easy. It takes a plan and the investment of time, determination, and dollars. The results, however, as with other investments, make it worth the effort. Happy organizing…for your image and impact. © 2000, Bunky Lundberg. All rights reserved.
